A recent graduate of the joint doctoral program in education at the University of California, Irvine and UCLA, Melanie's dissertation topic is "Laptops and the Gender Gap: An Investigation of a High School Core Curriculum Program." The study investigates students' attitudes and experiences in a voluntary specialized program for which laptop computers are provided by the families of students. The study highlights such issues as the Laptop Program's effectiveness in increasing computer literacy, academic achievement, and awareness of careers; the level of administrative commitment to gender equity in the Laptop Program; and the role of teachers in a core curriculum laptop program.


Previously, Melanie served as Principal of Fremont Adult School in the city of Fremont, California and as administrator for adult education, site technology coordinator, and website manager for Garden Grove Adult Education. She was a high school English and ESL teacher in Garden Grove Unified and Huntington Beach Union High School Districts. She also taught ESL and computer applications in adult education programs.


Melanie spent eight years in private industry both in sales and as an educational technology consultant and trainer. Furthermore, she served as District Technology Facilitator and also as Digital High School Coordinator in Culver City Unified School District.


Melanie facilitated a course for teachers to develop WebQuests from 1998 to 2003 at the UCI Summer Science Institute. Later, she served as adjunct faculty for the educational technology course required by aspiring school administrators in UC Irvine's Tier I credential program.
